We don’t think about our hormones until we start aging. Then our sex hormones, the thyroid and our stress glands start getting our attention.
Many people struggle with hormone issues from thyroid to sex hormones to adrenal issues. I have also have hormone challenges and its very frustrating. What I’ve learned from my research is there is actually a hierarchy of hormones.
Do you know what the most powerful hormone in the body is? It’s cortisol.
Cortisol is made in the adrenal glands. We have two pea-sized adrenal glands that sit on top of our kidneys. Their function is to handle all the stress in our lives! Do you have stress in your life? I know I have stress in mine. That stress depletes the cortisol and stresses the adrenal glands.
I like to think about cortisol as being the gas tank. You want to have a full tank of gas to support your hormones and provide the energy you need for a full day.
The next most powerful hormone is insulin.
Insulin can counter with cortisol. We most commonly think of insulin related to food. Insulin is intimately related to all of our food choices.
The next group of hormones is our sex hormones. Estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and DHEA.
Did you know there are over 400 functions of estrogen in the body?
Three of the most common functions are to support our body metabolism, help us sleep better and improves our memory.
The last group of hormones are the
thyroid hormones.
Remember earlier I mentioned that cortisol is like the gas tank, well your thyroid is like the accelerator. We want to press on the gas pedal to give us energy but often times, we press and not much is happening. We commonly then take supplements or increase the dosage to our thyroid medications but again not
The takeaway is that our hormones shift and if left unattended cause chaos in our minds and bodies. By testing and balancing these hormones your mind and body will function at a higher level throughout your entire life journey giving you greater energy, clarity and fullness of life.
